Resolution: Stop Social Media Debris

As we begin one of the most exciting and challenging years in a long time, it makes us stop and take pause and reflect on the current trends in the business world that might be helped or changed by social media. What used to take months to reach a reader’s hands is now on their iPhone, Tweetdeck or Facebook page in seconds.

Let’s take a look at 5 ideas that are probably in everyone’s interest to make it a successful year.

1. Don’t Encourage Social Media Spam. Be vigilant and report spammers on your social networks, especially Twitter, which seems to be the wild west of social media right now. Having 100,000 followers simply to have 100,000 followers is a little bit unproductive.

2. Retweet With a Purpose. Have you actually read the story or blog that you are Retweeting or just reading the title? Stop tweeting social media debris.

3. Make Sure Your Followers and Fans Matter. One word: Relevance. If your fans or followers are 17 years old and you sell mortgages, then what are you really doing? Sacrifice the audiences that aren’t right for you.

4. Go Where Your Fans Are. A successful social media strategy is different for every brand. When planning your campaign, keep in mind that even though some social media networks may be the hot topic right now, many of your brand loyalists may not be following you in that network. Build your conversation in the right place not only for you, but for your fans.

5. If You’re Going to Blog, Then Blog. Once you start a blog, you have made a promise to your readers. Honor your blogging commitments. A good tip is to come up with five or more topics at a time and prepare your schedule. Then, if an organic topic arises, go for it and blog away
